I recently switched my major from graphic design to sculpture. This is my redemption piece after having a rough semester. I welded a steel rod frame. I also bought chains and welded the links together. Lastly, I draped fabric over it and used a water and wood glue mixture to stiffen it. Thoughts?

Visual opposites in a Harlem subway station
I saw this interesting example of visual opposites on the platform at the 135th Street subway station in Harlem last night. At left we have a downhill skier with the message: “MORE snow dreams, please,” with an a promotional offer for the Killington ski area in Vermont. At right, we have an empty ad panel […]

Not Warhol’s Soup Cans
As an artist and former art history student, it’s hard to see a Campbell’s Soup Can without thinking of Andy Warhol. However, when I saw this crushed Campbell’s Soup Can laying in the street in Glen Ridge (NJ) below left, I wanted to photograph my own version of a Campbell’s Soup Can. Then, just for […]

Celebrating UFOs
There’s an interesting exhibition opening tomorrow at Andrew Edlin Gallery titled “April 14, 1561.” The date refers to an unusual event that occurred that day in Nuremberg, Germany: residents of the city saw what they described as an aerial battle, observing hundreds of spheres, cylinders and other odd-shaped objects that moved erratically overhead in the […]

It’s that time of the year for the Abominable Snowman
My guess is that the Abominable Snowman makes himself scarce in the New York City metro area during most of the year, but come December each year, he has a calling as a fashion model on Madison Avenue. I’m sorry to say I didn’t notice the name of the store, but here he is this […]

Cabinet furniture suggesting a NYC skyscraper
I saw this maple and bakelite (a type of plastic) cabinet by Paul T. Frankl at The Met this past weekend, and while I like it a lot as a beautiful piece of furnture, I also like it as an early 20th Century homage to skyscrapers. Despite being made as furniture, it does have a […]

Wear some Keith Haring
I walked by a store on Madison Avenue in NYC the other day, and some Keith Haring clothing in the store window caught my eye. I like this shirt, but it looks like it’s only made for women, so I guess I’m out of luck. The store is Alice + Olivia, and their Keith Haring […]

A man takes his half-mannequin for a walk
A man takes his half-mannequin for a walk … it almost sounds like the set-up for the punch line of a joke, but I guess I don’t have a punch line for this photo. I just noticed this guy walking down 10th Avenue in NYC the other day and thought it made for an interesting […]

Toothbrush street art
Did you brush your teeth this morning? If not, there’s a pair of oversize toothbrushes attached to a wall on the corner of 10th Avenue and 28th Street in New York City. While there was no information about these street art pieces at this location, from what I can gather online, it’s part of a […]

An Artist’s Mount Rushmore in Chelsea
I was in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC the other day for the first time in a while, and came across this new mural by Brazilian street artist Kobra, who has created his own version of an artist’s Mount Rushmore, featuring Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The mural is located above […]

Our Top Kavanaugh Pics Starting from the Beginning
I imagine people will be studying the Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation photographs for years to come. Maybe we’re at a cultural tipping point. Perhaps this is just one more body blow. Either way, the photos are brimming with pathos, irony and electricity as they take a searing look at power, gender and privilege. Having already […]

Alamy Trims Commission from 50% to 40% for Stock Photographer Photos
Times are tough for creatives everywhere as more and more services drive the prices of goods down. And, of course, lockstep with that is a downward pressure on earnings for said creatives. We’ve talked a lot about how people do not seem to value photos, videos, writing, or anything else that takes a specialized skill. […]

Pushed to the Limit: Kodak Portra 3 Stops Over
At night, it can be especially difficult getting enough light to shoot film. There are no color emulsions with speeds higher than ISO 800, and most stocks don’t even exceed 400. Pushing enables you to add sensitivity past the recommended ‘box speed’ of your film. Most labs adhere to the conventional wisdom: film has a […]

Joining a wildlife safari is a magic experience, one that stays with you long after you have returned home. It can be breathtaking in its beauty, awe […]
